Approximate Enclosed Space

Can we detect space, precisely- architectural space? By our spatial cognition, it is commonly a basic intelligence. We always detect spaces without thinking – it is already pre-computed in our subconscious mind. And based on those information, we occupied architecture. But how to teach virtual robot such basic spatial recognition?
By applying mathematical formulas into their algorithm.
