Texture Compression

It seems that I just made my models texture were too details. With 1000 x 1000 pixel (no alpha) RGB 16 bit on each object, it consumes 682.7KB. With the total of more than 500 objects, no wonder my application could not be launched on web player.

So I came with texture compression (DTX1 – no alpha) in Unity3D. It cost 42.7 KB on 256 x 256 KB texture image. It is 93.7% reducing memory – on each object! However, I still ought to see how overall image quality will be compromised. But, it is discoverable fast. How it is going with 512 x 512? Is it slightly different?
